Unexpectedly Expecting

When married couple Kenny and Bobbi McCaughey (pronounced McCoy) wanted to have more kids they turned to medical fertility treatment. However, upon attending a standard checkup, the Iowa couple were told given some startling news about what was growing inside Bobbi’s womb.

Instead of just the one embryo showing up on an ultrasound, the couple was told there were SEVEN! While multiple births are common when undergoing fertility treatment, with pregnancies resulting in twins and even triplets more often, septuplets, on the other hand, are extremely rare.

Due to the complications which could and would arise as a result of the newfound circumstances, the couple was suddenly posed with a life or death decision for both Bobbi and the babies.

The Shock Of Seven

Kenny was in disbelief when he first heard the news. At first, he said, “How many?”. He was told, “Seven”. To which he screamed and replied, “No, no, no, no. Are you serious?” Emotions understandably getting the better of him at that moment.

The couple later recalled that they had both experienced “sheer terror” at the very prospect of septuplets. However, the reality soon sunk in, as they were tasked with a very difficult decision they needed to make in the coming weeks.

Watching And Waiting

Prior to this pregnancy, the couple had previously experienced difficulties conceiving their first daughter, Mikayla, so they had anticipated things may be complicated the second time around. However, a septuplet pregnancy was far more difficult than they could have ever imagined, with Bobbi growing much faster with this pregnancy.

Bobbi recollects of this time that when she sat down her belly nearly touched her knees. “It was scary, you know, watching the stretch marks go ever so higher and wider and just thinking, how much longer can this body keep going?” The drama was just unfolding, however.

Praying Parents

Every mother knows the many changes and aches a pregnancy brings, and yet Bobbi was experiencing all this multiplied by seven! Despite the happiness that they would be the proud parents of a large family, the physical toll it was taking on petite Bobbi’s body was posing complications of its own.

As the pregnancy wore on, many thoughts were running through the couple’s mind such as the financial cost it would take to rear such a large family. With the future uncertain, the McCaugheys decided to place everything in prayer in guiding their next steps. Soon, they would have a critical decision to make.

High-Risk Pregnancy

Throughout the delicate nature of the pregnancy, Bobbi needed to be meticulously monitored. The McCaughey couple began reviewing the options at their disposal. Doctors had early on informed them about the controversial choice of “selective reduction”.

By this stage, the couple had garnered widespread media coverage due to the rare pregnancy. It seemed to them everyone had an opinion on what they should do, particularly in regard to the embryos which were most likely to survive. The couple would, however, take a risky decision which would lead many stunned.

In God’s Hands

Despite the couple being inundated with questions and unwarranted opinions regarding their family, the pair privately deliberated the matter and took into consideration all the different outcomes before making their decision on selective reduction.

As the McCaugheys were religiously devout, being Baptists, their decision was a simple one for them. They ultimately decided to decline selective reduction and leave everything “in God’s hands”. Bobbi’s maternal instincts gave her the feeling everything would work out in the end.
