Lots of misinformation is being spread about the Aarey metro car shed by political activists parading as environmentalists.
Out of 3,166 acres that Aarey Milk Colony occupies, the Maharashtra government handed over 30 hectares (74 acres) for the depot. Of this only 25 hectares will be used for the depot buildings. This is about 2 per cent of the entire area of Aarey Milk Colony. Compare that to the Film city which is built over 490 acres deep inside the aarey Colony.
That Aarey plot was earlier allotted to church by Previous govt. That land was being used for all kinds of illegal conversion activities. That small Aarey colony has 17 churches within a small area of 16 sq km. The HC later allotted the land for the metro car shed. Such activities in that area will make it difficult for the evangelists to carry out their conversion industry. That may be one of the major reasons they are opposing this car shed. Some of the well known names opposing the car shed are Dia Mirza and farhan Akhtar. Also Manoj Bajpai who is married to Shabana Raza.
The Metro is an absolutely essential amenity for Mumbaikars as it will not only make life easier for passengers of local trains, but will also save many lives lost due to unmanageable crowd in local stations. In 2018 alone 2734 people lost their lives in various Mumbai local stations and trains. Local trains have a carrying capacity of 2000 heads per rake, but it is bursting with 4500 heads per rake at present. An urgent alternative is immediately required to help relieve some of that pressure. But Movie celebrities do not care for the common man, because they do not have to travel in local trains. Most of these protesting movie stars have multiple luxury cars that hardly give 5 km per liter average. They each have more than 20-30 ACs in their homes. They have large farm houses that have been made by deforesting large tracts of forests. They travel in private jets that consume huge amount of fossil fuel and cause unimaginable pollution. They live a life of ultra-high carbon footprint. And still they come and preach about environment and trees to common man. Mumbai urgently needs some alternative to these local trains and private taxis and cars — and a modern metro network is the only thing that can cater to this need.
However, this fake environmental activism and protest against the Metro Line 3 car shed at Aarey Colony is totally blocking the efforts to give a new lifeline to Mumbai.
This metro will also serve as alternate conveyance for many people who are forced to use private cars and taxis. It is estimated that the metro can easily reduce highly polluting fossil fuel consumption to the tune of 2.5 lakh liters per year. That will save Rs 550 crore per year and lead to reduction in emissions by an incredible 6800 tonnes per annum. It will help remove 456771 vehicles from the roads of Mumbai. To get the same effect, we would have to plant 2 Cr trees. Instead of that just 2700 trees are being cut and compensated by 24000 trees planted elsewhere. 12000 more will be planted by MMRC.
Contrary to what the activists are spreading, the MMRC has planted 24000 trees to compensate for the loss of 2200 trees. Some of the trees have been planted in the degraded areas of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park while some have been planted inside the Aarey Milk Colony itself. These are not just empty claims. all these trees are geotagged and taken care of. They were planted 2-3 years ago and have now grown up to young trees.
Now here are some facts:
There are 3691 trees in Metro 3 depot land out of which 461 trees are to be transplanted and 2185 trees are to be cut and 13110 trees will be planted. It is important to note that these 3691 trees occupy approximately 17% of the total land that the Metro 3 project will be built upon(30 Ha.).
Per day of protests by these people is causing us
685 metric tonnes of vehicular CO2 emissions per day
INR 4.2 cr increase in cost per day
loss of 2 lakh project man-hours
5 lakh worth vehicle road space loss
5 lakh hours of time loss for the citizens which means 30 minutes of extra travel per commuter.
What the Metro will achieve: 197 trips of the metro will compensate for the rise of 63,953 kg/yr rise in CO2 due to loss of impacted trees. This is equivalent to 4 days of peak hour trips in a year. Lifetime CO2 increase due to impacted trees will be compensated by 3948 metro trips in about 80 days!
Delay in Metro Line 3 would release 6,800 tonnes of carbon annually into Mumbai’s atmosphere from the vehicles that occupy the city's roads due to non completion of Metro Line 3. On the other hand, felling of 2,200 trees for the metro car shed will lead to emission of just 50 tonnes of carbon annually.
What is more important? Saving just 50 tonnes of carbon by opposing tree felling in that area or saving 6800 tonnes of carbon by building the metro.
The increase in project costs due to delays is another point of concern. Already Metro Line 3’s total project cost has increased by Rs 7,000 crore to a total of Rs 30,000 crore.
This Metro car shed is actually a fight between the common Indians against the old church and madrasa supported leftist intolerant anti-India gang who basically want to wrest power from the hands of Indians.
